Changing telling to showing isn't always that easy but in this case, the "felt" made it telling. You were telling us what she was feeling instead of just showing us by putting us right in the action. It's not always so simple.Sometimes you need more of a rewrite to accomplish this.

Example:Jeff's response made Sarah mad. (Shallow POV)

Rewrite: Sarah's jaw tightened in response to Jeff's comment. How dare he accuse her of lying? (Deep POV)

Do you see the difference? Often deep POV requires more writing in general, more elaboration of what's going on and often includes internals (How dare he accuse her of lying?) That puts us directly into the character's head.I hope that helps.

Here are some words to look for that take us out of deep POV (I'm sure this isn't a complete list so I'm betting others will add to it.) However, there will be times when you need to use one of these words - writing is not an absolute! There are exceptions to every rule.
Felt/feel
Heard
Listened
Realized
Thought
Decided
Wondered

progress update

squeee just went to update my progress bar, thinking that I'd have to decide how long the vampire story is going to be, and it's already there! So I'm 1/4 of the way though! LOL of course, the last 3k or so are ranting dialogue, written while I have a cold, so likely aren't worth counting, but still... :)

Meanwhile, on lulu, Abacus gets nice reviews no hits and no purchases, and my wonderful *cough* freeby that is Genie...

Genie: 139 hits, 4 reviews, 37 downloads and no sales rank.
The reviews average 5.5, which is good, although I have to say likely biased [no comment] :-)

OK! On to monday... *wince*

Sunday, March 26, 2006

Oh Looki there's a Wiki!

I like the idea of this :-)

On Vampires

No, not *on* vampires, silly.

Thing is, I'm trying to write this vampire story. Was all going swimmingly, until I got to the point where I wanted my H. to suggest checking their.... and there I ran out of words, because the word I needed was 'the piece of the anatomy by which they absorb blood'.

So, off I went, googling, and to be honest it looks like I can make up anything I want LOL

I know, I *know*, it's fiction so of *course* I can make up anything I want, but I thought I'd try to stick with some sort of tradition. Thing is, reading the internet...
  • Vampires can breath. Or they can't.
  • Vampires have circulation. Or they don't.
  • Vampires can walk in sunlight. Or they can't.
  • Vampires have pale complexions. Or ruddy.

The list goes on. About the only thing that's common is that they have some kind of dependency upon humans in order to stay alive. To be honest, in there isn't even 100% agreement that this is through blood, but I think I'd better stick with that one. After all, the aim is a vampire story, not someone who has to drink other people's spittle to survive.

So. I need to make up my own vampire theory. This is going to change any way I like, in order to fit my story, so there. I'm going to try for rule, then reason. Wish me luck...

They are cold to touch. This poses problems, because they also move really fast and heal rapidly. See, if they're cold because they have slow circulation, it stands to reason they'd be sluggish, too, doesn't it? So. Let's say instead that their biology is super-efficient. In other words, when they need to heal, brain says 'fix that bit!' and energy rushes off to the injury in question, but the rest of the time, skin is pretty low on the priority list, so stays cold.

Vampires live for ages. Well, we age because of radiation from the sun and stuff, right? And vampires don't go out in the sun, do they? Need to make that a bit more convincing... You know how things look a colour not because they are that colour, but because they absorb all light that *isnt* that colour? Well maybe we absorb radiation but Vampires reflect it... wow, they'd be really good on a hot day, wouldn't they? No, this isn't working.

Right. We absorb radiation from what we consume, breathe in and stuff, too.
If radiation is like other biotoxins, blood is going to be *more* radioactive than the stuff that the bloody creature has consumed.

So why would a vampire eat blood?

Let's say vampires have a nifty way of *dispersing* the blood's radiation. But this takes quite a bit of physcial energy to do. Let's say a *lot*. In other words, when a vampire's de-radiating, s/he's pretty much out for the count.

Therefore, they won't want to eat anything that's too tricky to digest, or the energy gained from eating would be lost by de-radiating it.

So let's say vampires eat blood because its the rice and chicken of the mortal world. No allergies, no indigestion, and the shortest turnaround in digestive terms.

But UV raditation is like *all over*. Their body's would probably go into shutdown, just trying to process the stuff, and they're not gaining any energy from it, either. Plus it's not controlled - it's not all sitting tidily in their stomach, it's hitting them from all directions.

So what's the conclusion. Vampires have a nifty method of removing radiation from their systems but it's a big power drain and sunlight would likely kill them off. This explains 1. Why they like blood - because it's pretty much pure energy and not much extra digestive energy needed. and 2. why they don't like sunlight. and 3. why I'm going to have to make my Vamp.'s drowsey after eating LOL

Silver is bad. In the case of my story, it's also bad for my h., who for the sake of *fiction* I've given mild argyria. I don't want to take this too lightly, and here's why:
http://homepages.together.net/~rjstan/rose2.html
www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/PhonyAds/silverad.html

Colloidal Silver is dodgy stuff, people. Be wary.

Anyway, the reason I've used it in the story is down to the whole vampire/silver thing. Why might silver trigger such a fatal reaction in vampires? I've no idea. I do know that it has anti-biotic and anti-enzyme properties. Since this is fiction, I might put the radiation-dispersal down to a unique enzyme or something, I suppose? I am going to need biological advice on this, I think. Still, I'll keep writing.

More theories to be added as I need them...

:)

grumble

There's a book I probably won't buy, called A Dark Champion, by Kinley McGregor.

It's available through fictionwise for $5.99 or $5.09 for club members. (£3.44 to £2.92)
http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/eBook36868.htm

It's also available from harper collins US, for $4.79, which translates to about £2.75

(not too sure if that link is going to work. anyway)

It is also available from harper collins UK for £6.39

HELLO???

The paperback is also available from amazon UK for £3.44

I repeat: HELLO? HARPER COLLINS UK?? WAKE UP PLEASE!

To do: gain brain

So the thing is, this blog...
http://www.bagandbaggage.com/
...goes completely over my head, but it's linking to places I've stumbled across before...
(most notably... http://craphound.com/ and http://citmedia.org/blog/ ) ... and I'm thinking one day I might wake up with a brain big enough to appreciate what I'm looking at, so here it is, logged for prosperity...

...meanwhile, that google thing? Writely? There's another one (found through one of the above blogs) - http://www.ajaxwrite.com/

A bit slow on the uptake, maybe...

I know I know, I'm slow. Sorry.
Just in case there is *anyone* out there less slow than me, there's this really cool thing on lulu...
http://www.lulu.com/titlescorer/
... put in your title, select some options and see what the chances are that it's going to be a bestseller. Handy or what? hehe

Also, google has just taken over this really cool thing:
http://www.writely.com/
..as a result, you can't sign up for a new account, but you can put your email address down to be notified when you can. Worth looking at, I think - I particularly liked the backup line...

Urhghgh

So, long story but I had 40 minutes sleep last night. Yep, bed at 5:30, alarm at 6:10. yay. I then had to catch a bus which I swear to God used to come once an hour, but now comes once every two hours and let me tell you one hour forty-five minutes is a LONG time to wait in winter. What's that? First day of spring? Pah!

Anyway, back at my desk and unable to concentrate due to shivering, I toddle over to http://www.technorati.com to see how well word is spreading about my published writing buddies - answer: great if you're *not* looking for a full name! SO, for the benefit of mankind, here are some links to the blogs of:

Author Kim Rees, AKA Kim Knox

Author Jennie Andrus, AKA Jen Andrus

And website for Merris Hawk,

Meanwhile, Enchanted Ramblings is doing pretty well, mostly cuz people seem to quite like the reviews ;-) Yay ;)

Autiotalo wrote Abacus a *marvellous* review, which I have been so proud of I've pasted a bit of it against the main entry. oysters and beer

Here I go again.
So, I've recently read Sex, Lies and Online Dating by Rachel Gibson, and Simply Irresistable by Lucynder Storey.
Both feature a literary type (first example: writer, second example: english teacher) who meet a hunky coppy during a crime investigation, with which they are inextricably involved.
I confess I don't read a lot of contemporary fiction, and thought that the whole nice-girl-hunky-copper thing was a standard fantasy. However, turns out true life (assuming this is that) can be more entertaining than fiction... oysters and beer

Yyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I've almost recovered from weekend.

Installed something called Hello http://www.hello.com/ from Picassa, hence the cover thumbnails on the right, there. A bit fiddly (trying to be far too user friendly for its own good, I think), but it works, so I won't grumble :)

Just found a headless mouse by my desk. Ah, the joys of cat ownership. Still, she hasn't broken the washing machine yet, so she still has fractionally more brownie points than the dog.
Mind you: I haven't found the head, yet. If I'm sitting on it, she can have tripe for supper, too.

And finally, my Lulu.com daily totals:
Abacus: 77 / 1 / 2 / 22,054
Genie: 107 / 29 / 3 /0

I think I'm going to have to see about getting Abacus reviewed elsewhere, just to up it's 'visibility'. Please let me know if you'd like to have a free copy of Abacus - I'll be very happy to give you a copy in exchange for a (lovely or otherwise) review - on or off Lulu ;-)

[a while later]
Hmmm... that might be trickier than it first appears... for example,
www.allreaders.com, which says "if you're an author and want to sell or simply get your book read, our service is the best way to do it." ALSO says "Please, no more reviews of horror, short stories, ebooks, or books under 150 pages in length "

Rats.

Free Romance Books

...or perhaps I should say: "support self-publishers of free romance".

I was browsing through the 'romance' section of lulu and there are pages and pages of unrated, un-reviewed content. As a reader, I'm pulling out my hair trying to decide if anything is worth downloading. So, ideally ALL the books on lulu would be reviewed and rated, but that probably isn't going to happen. Instead, I'd like to encourage anyone who has a few spare moments to go and review the free downloads, which deserve your ratings, if not your support ;)

Now, thing is, lulu doesn't let you search by price. How annoying is that?

However... Google kind of helps out: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rls=GGLG%2CGGLG%3A2006-09%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=site%3Abooks.lulu.com+%22Download%3A+%24free%22++%22Fiction+%26+Literature+%3E+Romance%22&btnG=Search&meta=

Plus, since zero-royalty sales don't count as sales, you can browse by sales rank and find all the free stuff at the end - from about here onwards;

http://books.lulu.com/browse/index.php?fCLID=787&fOffset=34

So, using those search results, here are the beginnings of a list. To be added to as and when I have a moment ;)

Futuristic & Fantasy Romance (AKA the Hadnot section)

Ebook Best Sellers 2005

Okay, so I'm a little slow off the mark with this one, but 'check this out':
http://www.idpf.org/bestseller/bestsellers.htm

Upon reading it, I thought 'yeah, yeah, yeah: Dan Brown'. Then I thought: Cool, Douglas Adams. Then I thought: Cool, number 23 is smut.

Then I thought: NUMBER 23 IS SMUT!!

Then I thought: blummin nora! Although the first 20 out of the 30 listed are 'big name publishers', the last 10 include:

No. 23: Office SlaveJ. W. McKenna Renaissance E Books $4.99
No. 28: Fallen AngelsTerence West Double Dragon $5.99
No. 29: PunishedKimberly Zant New Concepts Publishing $3.99

So firstly; wow, of all the epublishers out there, it's the smuthouses that are topping the list.
Secondly, where are Ellora's Cave, Amber Quill, Liquid Silver, etc etc? I mean, Ellora's Cave's absense is what surprised me, really. .. no doubt that's due to the source data, which was apparently from eReader.com, Fictionwise and OverDrive.

Also, how come none of the regency romance I spend a fortune on is showing? huh? huh?

Meandering

Where was I?

Right, Lulu. Apparently there was a Lulu meetup going on today in london. I didn't go, because my dog had a slight 'accident' in the front room, and I've been breaking my back washing the carpet instead. Yay.

Meanwhile,
Genie: 90 / 27 / 3 / ?
Abacus: 55 / 1 / 1 / 21,573

I am feeling bad about Abacus now. I might need to actually promote it, poor thing...

ALSO, I just ran across Neil Gaiman's blog and mention it here because, hey, a name drop is as good as actually knowing someone, right? Or being someone. Or being related to them. *stares into space*

I am a loser!!

LOL Okay, well I'll be a little less harsh on myself: I am not a winner hehe

I pretty much knew I hadn't written dirtily enough, but suffice to say I am not among the talented AQ finalists. Rats: now I have to think of what to do with the story hehe

So what I need is somewhere that will want a short historical based around a ONS. hmmmm.... :)
